Apnea Test

Definition:

Test performed on the intubated and mechanically ventilated patient to assess spontaneous breathing ability

Performed to Assess Brain Death:

Pre-oxygenate with 100% O2 for 10 minutes

Check ABGs at baseline

Disconnect from the ventilator

Continuous O2 is provided by tracheal catheter with the tip approximated near the carina, for 6-8 minutes

Patient observed for 8-10 minutes

Positive Test:

No observed spontaneous breaths associated with a rise in the PaCO2 greater than 60 or >20 mmHg increase over the baseline carbon dioxide level determined by ABGs
